When ever I’ve unwound pre knitted clothing I wrap the yarn round empty plastic drinks bottle, dip the bottle into water until it’s all wet and find a warm place to dry the yarn it may take a few days, but it worked really well, it doesn’t have any kinks and can be wound into balls ready to use,

You may want to advise folks to thoroughly wash any thrifted yarns. No telling who’s worn/sweated in them, and once they get to a thrift store sorting area, cleanliness is not a priority as they have huge piles of garments to sort out.

I’ve had yarn for years from a couple of sweaters that I unravelled. Was never sure what to do with them, but fir the last year I and several other ladies do a weekly workshop where we crochet things to help support a local community cafe. We’ve didn’t most of the time crocheting and knitting small squares to make into blankets so that some if the customers can borrow one and still sit out on the little patio on chilly days with their coffee !

I have does this for many years. It is not economic but once you get the hang of it, it can be very soothing.even if you only collect a small amount of yarn it can be a pair of socks or booties. I have even picked up some felted sweaters and they can make some nice hats, and bags.
