Description

Shawls are one of the most popular projects to crochet. If you’ve ever wanted to crochet a shawl, this is the perfect place to start! In this video, shawl expert Jen Lucas shows you how to make a top-down double crochet triangle shawl in two ways: one with traditional shaping along the center and top edges as well as a heart-shaped variation which has some extra increases along the top edge. Those extra increases will help your shawl stay in place so this is a really great skill to have as a crocheter.

With clear instruction and plenty of tips along the way, Jen will show you how to create your own shawl with any yarn you choose. Different yarn weights will affect yarn amounts, but for reference she recommends starting with at least 700-1,000 yards of a worsted weight yarn (depending on the desired size). Use any hook size that achieves a fabric that you like.

The basic DC triangle shawl pattern

Ch 5, slip stitch to join into a ring.

Row 1: Ch 3 (counts as dc here and throughout), (2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) into ring, turn. 6 dc sts.

Row 2: Ch 3, dc in first dc, dc in each dc to ch-3 sp, (2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc) in ch-3 sp, dc in each dc to last dc, 2 dc in last dc, turn. 6 dc sts inc.

Repeat Row 2 to desired size.

Jen shows us the difference between both shawls in this video by placing one sample directly on top of the other. You can see how the extra increases affect the shape of the heart-shaped shawl. Next, she demonstrates how to create the shaping for the heart-shaped variation.

The heart-shaped variation

Ch 5, slip stitch to join into a ring.
Row 1: Ch 3 (counts as dc here and throughout), (2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) into ring, turn. 6 dc sts.
Row 2: Ch 3, 2 dc in first dc, dc in each dc to ch-3 sp, (2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc) in ch-3 sp, dc in each dc to last dc, 3 dc in last dc, turn. 8 dc sts inc.

Repeat Row 2 to desired size.

Both versions of this shawl are great for working on while watching T.V. or visiting with friends because they are so straightforward and easy to memorize. Crochet one for yourself or for a friend, and you too will fall in love with making shawls!
