There are some classic stitches in crochet that everyone should know how to do. The granny circle is one of those classics. Hi, I'm Corrina Ferguson. And in this video, we're gonna learn how to work up a granny circle. It's time to learn to make a granny circle.
And when we say granny, it's a style of crocheting where there's these little clusters of double crochet and some chain spaces. You'll see granny squares, granny hearts, granny rainbows, maybe, but this is a granny circle. So I'm gonna walk you step-by-step through the circle but first I want to talk to you about the steps. We start with a little crochet chain and a bunch of double crochets to start. Then we do some two double crochets.
Then we do some threes and then we get into a point where we're doing threes and fours. And everything's written out for you if you'd like to make one of your own. I think granny crochet circles in a cotton or a wool non-flammable yarn are great for washcloths or to put down for little trivets to hold hot pots and stuff. But you can make it as big as you want, but the instructions for everything are there. So let's go step through step and crochet ourselves a granny circle.
Step one is just is actually get the circle started. So we're gonna start with a slipknot. I like to wrap it around my finger and pull through. We don't wanna cinch to this up too tight. We want it to be able to slide easily on the hook.
So we've got our slipknot on our hook and we're gonna chain four. One, two, three, and four. And then we're gonna use a slip stitch to close this chain into a circle. So I'm gonna insert my hook into the first chain and yarn over and pull through. And then pull it all the way through.
And then we've got a little circle here. So we're gonna start this out. And all of these instructions are written out for you so you can follow along. We're gonna start out by chaining four. The chain three is the first double crochet and the fourth chain is the chain that's gonna be in between our double crochets.
And then we're going to go to double crochet into the center of that circle. Now it's kind of hard to see the center of the circle when you first start, but the more you go along, the bigger that gets. So we're gonna go ahead and pull through and do a double crochet. And then we're gonna chain one. And then we're gonna go and do a double crochet.
And you'll see, even just with two double crochets in here, how the center of the circle has become that much more obvious. So once you finish, you get this, which is 11 double crochets and chain ones. And the initial chain that we started with and we're ready to close up this little circle. So we're going to go ahead and we're gonna go into that top of that chain three from the previous round. We're gonna go into that and we're going to slip to close.
Now, in the next round, we're gonna start to do our double crochets into the spaces. And I kind of love crocheting into the spaces 'cause you don't have to catch strands. It's super easy. So we're gonna start with a chain three. That counts as our first double crochet.
And then we're going to double crochet into the space. The same space we came out of. Which is right there. Gonna double crochet into that space. And then, in between each set of two double crochets, we're going to have a chain one.
So I'm gonna chain here, chain one. And then I'm gonna do two double crochets into the next space. One and two. So that we start increasing the size of our circle. So two double crochets and then a chain one.
And we're gonna do that all the way around the circle. So we've got the two double crochets, separated by a chain one space, all the way around this circle. And we've gotten to the end and we've slipped to close. So we're ready to do three double crochets in each place. So for the first one, we start with a chain three.
Two, three. That counts as our first double crochet. And then into the same space that we just came out of, we're gonna do two double crochets right there. So we do one. And we do two.
So that's our first cluster there. And then we chain one and then we go into the next chain space from the previous round and we do more double crochets. Lots and lots of double crochets here. So we're gonna do three into this space. And that's going to be increasing the size of our granny circle.
And so it lays nice and flat for us. So we're going to do that all the way around the rest of our circle. Three double crochets into the chain space and then a chain one to make the space for the next round. So I've done my three double crochets in each round all the way around and I've started up the next round. So for the next round, we're not gonna do four double crochets in each chain space.
'Cause that's gonna make it get too big too fast and it'll start to ruffle. And this is written out in the instructions for you. But what you're going to do is you're gonna do a cluster of three and then you're gonna do four in the next space. And of course you're in a chain space so there's plenty of room for that. And you don't have to worry about it at all.
And what that's gonna allow us to do is to allow us to increase a little more organically and to make sure that our circle is circle shaped and not, for example, bowl shaped. So we'll do clusters of threes and fours, separated by those chain spaces. And you can see how those spaces start to do kind of an alternating pattern here. So we've finished that round and we have our clusters of three and then four and then three and then four. So in the next round, the patterning is gonna change a tiny bit.
What's going to happen is we're going to be working three clusters into the chain spaces, but then we're also gonna work three clusters, clusters of three double crochet, in between the fours. So let's take a look at how that looks. So here I've started my three clusters and I get to one of those fours from the previous round. So I don't wanna stretch all the way over to the next space. I've already chained one.
I'm just gonna double crochet in between the set of four. So I have one, two, three, four. I'm gonna go right in between the two. I'm not gonna go into the normal part of the top of the stitches. You know how we would go in here?
I'm gonna go actually in between the two stitches. So you can separate a little bit there and you can see. There's no chain space there, but we're gonna go right in between the stitches. And we're gonna pull through and do our double crochet. So yarn over, pull a loop, pull through two.
Pull through two. Yarn over. Grab my loop. Goin' and goin'. Makin' sure we don't split the yarn.
And then I get a cluster of three right there. So we're going to continue in that pattern. We'll do three in the spaces and then we'll do three in between. And lemme show you again what I'm talking about in the in-between. So here's a cluster of four.
We're not going into these portions of the stitches. We're actually going into this space right here that's in between the stitches. So there's the stitch, there's the stitch. And you can see how double crochets are kind of elongated and we're going into that space right there. And we can see how we've done it right here.
And then also on the finished granny square. You can see some of the clusters of three are in the spaces and then some of them are in between the groupings of four. Thank you so much for joining me to learn how to crochet a granny circle. Check out our website for more great videos.
