When learning to crochet, there are two things you’ll need: yarn and a crochet hook. With such a wide variety of crochet hooks out there, figuring out which one is right for you can be confusing. In this video, Corrina Ferguson breaks down everything you need to know about choosing the right crochet hook for you and your project.

Corrina begins by discussing that crochet hooks come in a variety of sizes and showing a large plastic crochet hook, a small steel hook, and several in between. Depending on the yarn and the project, a different hook size will need to be used. The crochet pattern will tell you what hook size you will need for the project. Additionally, the yarn label will often list a recommended crochet hook size that will help you determine what size hook you’ll need for a project. Corrina notes that the hook size listed on the yarn label is only a recommendation. What’s most important for determining which size of hook to use is to use the hook size that gives you the gauge listed in the crochet pattern.

Corrina also reviews some other features of crochet hooks. They can come in a variety of materials, as well as have different hand and thumb grip configurations. It’s really about experimenting to discover which crochet hook is right for you.

How about the shape of the hook itself? There is a significant difference between two types, and it seems some crocheters love one and hate the other! I've heard them referred to as Susan Bates versus Boyle regardless of the actual brand.
