Learn the Granny Scallops Stitch Pattern

Learn to crochet this fun granny stitch variation—the Granny Scallops stitch! Part granny stripe, part scallop stitch, this colorful stitch pattern is very fun to work up. Let me show you how to do it!

First things first, you’ll need some yarn. I’m using three colors, but you could use more or less if you prefer. Although this stitch pattern could be made in a solid color, it really looks best in at least two colors. I used mostly acrylic worsted weight yarn scraps and a size 7 (4.5mm) hook to make the samples shown, but this would look great in other yarn weight/hook combinations too.

As you work back and forth, changing colors every other row, you can choose if you would like to fasten off.

With 1st color, chain a multiple of 11 stitches + 10 to begin. In my sample, I chained 32 stitches.

Row 1: Working into the bottom of the chain, DC in 4th ch from hook, ch 1, skip next 2 chs, SC into the next ch…

(Row 1 continued)… [ch 5, skip next 4 chs, SC into next ch, ch 1, skip next 2 chs, (DC, ch 1, DC) into next ch, ch 1, skip next 2 chs, SC in next ch] across until 3 chs remain…

(Row 1 continued)… ch 2, skip next 2 chs, DC into last ch.

Row 2: Ch 1, turn, 1 SC in first DC, skip ch-2 sp, [3 DC into each of the next 3 ch-1 sps, 1 SC in next ch-5 sp] across until all ch-5 sps have been worked…

(Row 2 continued)… 3 DC into next ch-1 sp, 2 DC into top of turning ch. Change to next color.

When changing colors, try this method: Complete last stitch in last color, then yo with new color and pull up loop…

…pull on ending tail of old color until last loop of old color disappears.

Row 3: Ch 4, turn, 1 SC between 2nd and 3rd DC of first scallop, [ch 1, (DC, ch 1, DC) in next SC, ch 1, 1 SC between third and fourth DC of next scallop, ch 5, skip next 3 DC, 1 SC before following DC] across until 3 DC and 1 SC remain, ch 1, 2 DC in last SC.

Row 4: Ch 3 (counts as first DC), turn, 1 DC in first DC, 3 dc in ch-1 sp, [1 sc in ch-5 sp, 3 dc in each of the next 3 ch-1 sps] until all ch-1 sps have been worked, SC in 1st ch of ch-4. Change to next color as described above.

Row 5: Ch 3 (counts as first DC), turn, 1 DC in first sc, ch 1, [1 SC between 3rd and 4th DC of next scallop, ch 5, skip next 3 DC, 1 SC before the following DC, ch 1, (DC, ch 1, DC) in next SC, ch 1] across until 5 DC remain, skip next 3 DC, SC in space before following DC, ch 2, 1 DC in top of ch-3.

Repeat Rows 2-5 for pattern, changing color at the end of each even numbered row.

After working Row 6 (a repeat of Row 2), my sample looked like this:

After completing Row 12, my sample looked like this:

This stitch pattern is very versatile. It has great drape and would make a lovely garment or blanket. In fact, the colors that I used in the sample make me think of frothy waves on the beach, and I’m very tempted to make a beach blanket with this stitch pattern! What are you going to make? I wish the instructions could be printed out without all the photos. I am nearly a life-long crocheter and just the photo of the finished swatch would work for me. I learned how to crochet as a teenager and am now in my 80s.
