Bruges crochet is a technique used to make lacy crochet ribbons or braids. These decorative motifs can be connected by slip stitching the chains together, allowing you to work in all sorts of directions. Instructor Mary Beth Temple guides you through how to make Bruges crochet techniques and shares her tips and tricks for making this technique accessible to all skill levels!
Mary Beth begins the class by looking at four ribbons – plain, alternating, filet, and treble crochet. Once the basic ribbons are mastered, it’s time to take your Bruges crochet in a new direction. Mary Beth guides you through two different techniques to curve your motifs. The first technique is worked using short rows; shorter stitches are used along one edge to help the fabric make a gentle curve to be worked in the opposite direction. The next curved method is the gathered curve, one of Mary Beth’s favorite for curving her motifs. Both create beautiful, decorative patterns that you can alter to work for a variety of projects.
The class ends with Mary Beth working a stunning circular motif using a Filet Mesh ribbon. She once again shares her expertise on how to adapt this pattern if you want to continue your Bruges crochet adventure and design motifs of your own. With nearly 60 minutes of clear instruction from a world-renowned crochet expert, you’ll find yourself coming back to this class again and again.
Meet Mary Beth Temple, your instructor and crochet designer. Mary Beth reviews what you’ll learn in this class. She discusses the origins of the technique and gives a little detail about the motifs demonstrated in the course.
In this session, Mary Beth demonstrates how to make two kinds of Bruges ribbon – the Plain Ribbon and the Alternating Ribbon. Both ribbons are created using a combination of chain stitches and double crochets, making these motifs easy even for beginners.
Mary Beth demonstrates how to crochet a filet mesh ribbon. This motif takes the principles of filet crochet and applies it to a Bruges ribbon motif. Chain-one spaces separate the double crochet stitches on every row.
In this lesson, Mary Beth explains how to work one of her favorite Bruges ribbons – the Treble Crochet Ribbon. For this motif, the treble crochet stitch is worked across the front of the fabric, really accentuating the technique and creating a truly unique fabric.
Part of what makes Bruges Crochet so unique is the ability to create curves in the fabric. In this lesson, Mary Beth explains how to work create a curve using short rows. These short rows are worked by creating different-sized stitches, from single crochet up to the standard double crochet used in the motif.
In this session, Mary Beth explains how to create a gathered curve in Bruges Crochet. This method does not use short rows; instead, extra rows are worked, and the chain edges are gathered together to make the curve.
With Bruges Crochet, you can create circular motifs out of the ribbons learned in other lessons. Mary Beth works a beautiful circular motif taking a Filet Mesh Ribbon and working it into a circle.
